today i came across excellent presentation on [[http://securitytube.net|security tube]] -- 10 things about hard drives. presentation is prepared and performed by a forensic's expert on data recovery. i pretty sure everyone will learn something interesting from this one. for a start -- do you know how many times does it require to erase data from hdd before it's really impossible to recover them back? i was told about 7-10 times, some say up to 35, while the answer is... 1. did you know it can last as little as less than 3 hours for 500GB hdd to be securely cleaned with standard, dedicated ATA command? go on and learn more (links to [[http://www.youtube.com|youtube]]):
