2013.03.28 - jungle it is

some time ago i posted about, what Herb calls hardware jungle. well – the jungle is here and looks like it is doing better and better every day. few years back Nvidia Optimus has entered the market. curently we can see ARM's big.LITTLE, that does roughly the same, but with CPUs instead of GPUs. AMD along with Texas Instruments and others propose HSA – a big step into the jungle.

of course not only processing hardware undergoes changes. recently Lukier sent me info about silicon retina – an optical sensor, that works event-based, instead of frame-based. interesting idea, that effectively scales required processing load, while there is more going on on the observed scene.

but you need not to fast-forward. in fact many interesting things already happened to currently existing computers. there are number of cache effects, that affects the way you write software. because CPUs are so much faster than any other component, including RAM, Amdhals's law has reversed…
