2025-01-14 3D printing and tool changing

this summer i built a new 3D printer – Voron 2.4. TL;DR – it's a blast! :D i mean both the building process and using it. :) when i selected Voron 2.4 as my next 3D printer, the only real alternative i was considering was Prusa XL. i must say i had a hard time picking one, but eventually, with price and open-sourceness factored in, i decided to go with Voron 2.4.

there is however one thing that i am missing – multi-material capabilities. to be more precise – a tool changer. there are multiple reasons for me to care, namely:

multi-material supports
mechanically combining TPU into prints in different materials
ease of switching between different materials (my typical set involves: PLA, PET-G, ASA and TPU)

the 1st point is the most relevant for me here. linked video is a good start to get you interested. there's far more good tips in 3D printing today podcast (which i HIGHLY recommend, btw!).

Voron 2.4 Tapchanger

there's however still a good option out there – Voron 2.4 Tapchanger, the tool changer for Voron 2.4. that looks awesome! my excitement went through the roof… until i realized there's a catch in my case… my existing Voron 2.4 barely fits on my table – there's maybe 10cm of free space above it. yet tool changer needs some more space than i can afford at the moment. :(

atm i do not see how i could address this issue. there's just not enough space in my room. i've already needed to scrap my old 3D printer, to even put Voron here. guess i'm out of luck for now. :/

there's a nice klicky probe for z-height in Voron 2.4 (quad-gantry leveling, bed level mesh compensation, z-height adjustment, etc…). now there's a new kid in town: Voron Tap – a nozzle-based z-probe. it uses optical sensor to measure z-height, instead of a dedicated end-stop switch on magnets. it is said to be way more precise than klicky and faster, as it does not involve grabbing / parking of any additional tool.

that's definitely a candidate for upgrades queue. :)
